Looks like a turkey vulture to me as well. Poor guys have a face even a mother would have trouble loving, but what a gorgeous wing span.

what are the main tourist attractions in washington, dc? What is the culture and cuisine of washington? And lastly, how is the transportation system of washington?

Plan on getting a hotel in the suburban areas of Wash DC, either Northern Virginia or Suburban Maryland. Get yourself a hotel that is close to the local Metro (DC subway) stop.

The absolute best way to travel around Washington DC is by using the Metro (DC’s subway system). You can park your car at SOME Metro stations and then buy some fare cards and use the Metro to get around town. Why do I recommend the Metro? Because while traveling by car, you will have a hard time finding available parking in Wash DC. Most parking garages are filled-up with commuters and so forth. Plus, you never know when the police are going to be closing an entire street and diverting traffic to who knows where, just to accomodate one of the many parades they like to have in DC.

You can either get a shuttle from your hotel to the local Metro station (many hotels offer this), or you can drive your car to some of the Metro stations, that have parking lots. Those Metro stations with parking lots are usually FREE on weekend.

The best thing to do is check-out the Metro map and get off at what they call the Smithsonian Metro stop. When you go above ground…it’s all right there…like the Emerald City in Wizard of Oz. The Smithsonian stop is right in the heart of the National Mall that extends from the Capitol to the Potomac River. All the major monuments are right there.

Be sure to do the obligatory tours of the Capitol and Washington Monuments. Tickets for entry are FREE…but you have to get them in advance of the time you wish to take the tours. Best bet is to get your tickets in the morning for an afternoon tour, and then spend the morning exploring.

Security is tight at the Capitol. No food. No liquids. No nail clippers. Yadda yadda. But the tour is pretty cool.

Ok, but the real treasures of DC are the Smithsonian Museums..and they are also located right on the National Mall, between the Washington Monument and Capitol. Again, entrance is FREE and there are no tickets to bother with. Modest security to get in…then you can enjoy them. Natural History Museum. American History Museum. Some other art galleries (which are also super cool). But, my favorite is the Air & Space Museum. I’ve taken friends there from out of town that said they were not interested in that "stuff". But once they stepped through the doors and saw the Gemini and Apollo space capsules, their eyes lit-up. They also have an inexpensive food court in the Air & Space museum with stuff like McDonald’s and Pizza and sandwiches. (Probably the cheapest place to eat on the Mall.)

Some final pointers here. Be sure to dress comfortable. Be sure to have some really comfortable walking shoes. The National Mall is a BIG area to cover…and so are the museums. You probably know this, but have a game plan in case your family-group becomes seperated.

Getting a tour of the White House is not easy. You have to have a group of 10 people to do it and you have to get prior permission through your Congressman. Back in the days when they had fewer restrictions, I went on a White House tour. I found it to be – boring. The US Capitol tour is a much better tour. And frankly, that’s where all the action is taking place in DC.

Oh, and others on here will recommend stuff like Georgetown and DuPoint Circle areas and stuff like that. Fine…if you have the time. But there’s not much to see. Those are more "trendy areas" where artists and coffee shop types like to hang-out and sip lattes, wear Birkenstock shoes and discuss ancient Zorastian poetry. The kids will get bored very fast. (Even I get bored very fast.)

Most hotels will have free touristy type maps of the area to promote the local sites and sounds of DC. Plan on eating lunch at the Air & Space Museum and then saving your appetites for when you go back to your hotel (where it will be cheaper to eat and you have some reasonable choices that won’t break the bank).

I want to take a tour of the East Coast starting from Sanfrancisco in the cheapest manner possible. We will be
3 members in number. Anyone could please suggest
the best way of doing this. Air travel from Sfo to any of the above destinations and covering all the destinations on tour
Complete package will be useful. Thanks

Just drive around and camp or stay where ever you choose. I did that after graduating college and traveled the entire southeast for under $700. Other than the cheap way, I don’t have any other ideas. I just find that traveling in that manner allows you to really experience places. If you want ideas of stuff to check out, I can help you with that, being as I live in Delaware.

Places to check out:

NYC
washington, D.C.
Philadelphia
Albany and upstate NY (Adirondacks and Catskills)
Shenandoah National Park (Virginia)
Great Smokey Mountains (North Carolina & Tennessee)
Florida Coast and Key West
Beaches (in Delaware, New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland are really nice.)

Starting in July of this year, the state of washington will issue infractions for driving while using a cell phone. Talking on the phone alone can’t get you pulled over, but it is an additional charge that the officer may add on to primary reason you were pulled over. What are your thoughts on this? Should all states do this?

Yes they should. I don’t even trust regular drivers who are paying attention to the road, yet alone using a cell phone.

LEARN TO DRIVE!
